Established in 2002 with some of the beautiful vintage beads that were left to me by my late sister, Desirée, Beach Candy Jewelry was born.
Desirée had beautiful brown hair as thick as a horse's mane, and a cheerful face covered in freckles! We all called her "Desi".
Desi used to make seed bead necklaces, and give them to random people in exchange for a hug. When Desi was 12 years old she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Her surgeries left her with little use of her left side so, my dad had a board made, so that she could string her little seed beads onto silk thread, using only one hand. Desi's doctors gave her six months to live. She lived 15 years, and she was an angel on earth who touched many lives.
I created Beach Candy as an homage to the memories of Desi that I hold so close. A couple of her favorite things were the beach and candy! The most vivid memories I have are of endless days we spent, every summer, at the beach, from early morning until the sun went down...sunning and bodysurfing from 45th Street to the Manhattan Pier, as well as an occasional bike trip down the bike path to Hermosa. Sometimes, we would collect glass bottles and take them to the corner store, "Jerry's Market" to trade them for cash. We would spend every cent we earned on the endless selection of penny candy.
I am a self-taught jewelry designer who loves to work with wire! I honestly don't think Beach Candy Jewelry would exist, had I not received exemplary training in wire-bending, while employed as an R.D.A. for the best orthodontist on the planet, Dr. Duane Grummons! Some of my best years!
I choose not to ever copy the work of others. Inspiration comes from within. I love to work with my clients on custom, one-of-a-kind pieces; especially bridal and bridal party jewelry! I take a great deal of pride in the quality of my work, as I am quite the perfectionist! I have been known to spend hours on something only to tear it all apart and start again from scratch! If I don't absolutely LOVE it I will not sell (or even show) it! My designs are fun, flirty and beachy, yet classic and timeless. I also believe in our Country! I will NEVER buy something from another country and sell it here.
All of my items are proudly made by own hands, in the U.S.A.
I create my pieces with semiprecious stones, such as peruvian opals, amethyst, carnelian, jade, iolite, onyx, and many others. I also use freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals, natural coral, beautiful sea shells such as mother of pearl and abalone, and I use turquoise and other stones found in nature.
I use .925 sterling silver, .999 fine silver, and 14kgf gold. I am happy to use 14k solid gold (on commissioned pieces only).
I am a stickler for creative packaging. I love to wrap my little treasures thoughtfully, to provide the utmost in quality and presentation!
I don't just love designing and creating; it is like breathing to me. It is a necessity I cannot explain! It is definitely in my blood, and as long as I am breathing, I will keep finding new, beautiful things to create!
